Amazing set of hand forged blades from Scotland from George Sayers, pro at Merion Cricket Club beginning around 1913. George was son of Ben Sayers Sr., renowned clubmaker from Scotland at the turn of the century. Presumably George had these commissioned by his brother Ben, an innovative clubmaker who remained in Scotland to develop his father's business immensely. The iron sole indicates 'Rustless' so they are most likely forged stainless. The 3,5,7 and 9 have heads with the muscle weight in the center; the 4,6,8 and PW have the weight moved to the top and sole. The 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, are nearly the same lengths and may be why the 3,5,7,9 have the word PAREX (paired?) engraving (in the 1930's Spalding paired lengths on a set promoted by RT Jones). All heads have the familiar 'Robin' cleek mark of Sayers found post 1920. The 4,6,8 also have a crown mark. Ferrules are perfect and note especially the PW with the hosel taper to a small ringed ferrule. Extra-fine condition steel shafts which frequency check to FCM 5.3 with grips, so about Medium flex. Excellent Golf Pride Victory grips, still soft and no flaws and including intact black plastic collars. These clubs were not played much as there is only minor front of sole nicking and sole scratching. 5 iron 37", D0.
