Ready for play! Hard to find limited edition introductory model 'by Nicklaus' forged VIP muscleback blades. S/N matched 2-PW # OS2522R. Heads very good with some edge dinging and no gouges. Original sand blasting. Note crowns lining the face and dotting the I. Perfect black ferrules with all rings - the 5 ferrule has a small chip in back of top ring - the 8 with small chip in face side of top ring.. Fine Tourney Taper "microstep" steel shafts which the MacGregor catalog states is a "shaft with literally millions of steps ... so small they can only be seen with a high power microscope". (Sort of like today's stepless steel shafts). No bag burn marks; some nuisance yellowing on a few shafts which otherwise have great chrome sparkle. Recently replaced Lamkin Victory grips are like-new and soft. This basic design was changed in 1968 to a small engraving of 'by Nicklaus' - the 1967's are seldom found this nice.

Below are given images from the 1967 and the 1968 Macgregor catalogs, as sourced from Jim Kaplan's 'MacGregor Golf History' which uses first hand MacGregor information which he edited into several books on Classic Golf club makers.

2 iron length is 38 3/4" to end of butt (38 1/2" excluding 1/4" for butt end). 5 iron 37 1/4" to end of butt. 2 iron swingweight is D-2. Flex measured with grip on is 6.0 FCM which is about equal to today's firm. Although MacGregor had cataloged multiple shaft flexes since the early 1940's (or earlier), they do NOT list the '67 VIPs as being available in multiple flexes. My assumption is that these were offered in one flex and that no shaftband ID was needed; these irons have no shaftbands and there is no indication or remnant suggesting a band had existed. If you plan to lengthen, a half inch adds about 3 swingweights, using the same grip weight so if you wanted a modified 39 1/4" 2 iron (to butt), then the new swingweight would be D-5. The catalog indicates a sand iron and driving iron might be ordered. I have not seen the VIP SI from this year but have several 271's on clubsofdistinction.com from 1967.
