Late 1920's steel shaft from Horton Manufacturing, Bristol, Ct. This seamless steel shaft was designed by a GE engineer that also designed the Schenectady putter. He assigned his patent process to Horton, including a stepping process. Horton developed the unstepped shaft but opted not to do the stepping which was picked up by farm tool maker True Temper. Horton evolved into the golf business with Bristol Golf selling their shaft making ops to Union Shaft. This particular shaft has a tip OD of .31" and is tapered; the butt is wood tipped for the leather wrap nail; shaft length is 42 1/2". It is easily extended. The label says "The Horton Mfg Co. ... Bristol SEAMLESS steel golf shaft ... ptd Nov. 26, 1910 .. Bristol, Ct ...Made in USA". Hard to find these early shafts with readable labels. [Note: this is not the original brazed copper shaft but is one of the follow-on developments to the original Horton patent .. USGA rulemakers did not approve steel shafts until the mid 1920's ]
